Branding: Thumbs up to Chicken Sausage!

A few weeks ago, I went to what is becoming a favorite spot to take visitors, Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand in East Atlanta. This place is delicious! They opened in March 2011, and I first heard about it through tweets & status updates of friends trying out the new place. Knowing absolutely nothing about this place other than seeing photos of their food via the internet, my husband and I decided to go. When we walked in, I thought, “Wow, whoever designed this place knew what they were doing.” Sometimes I wonder if I notice these things because I’m a designer, but I I heard people behind me commenting on the wallpaper and fun menu names, so its not just me.
EVERYTHING has some thought put into it. Their logo has taglines reading “So Cluckin’ Good!” and “Hand Crafted”, and I think you see both the humor element as well as the hand-crafted element throughout the brand. For example, I had “The Hot Mess” not a “Chlli Dog with Cheese”, and their condiment table is made of reclaimed wood and all their plastic-ware is recycled as well. All the fonts and textures hint at a time when typesetting was done by hand, and printing was an imperfect art, where each piece was just a little different. This ALL relates to the “Hand Crafted” tagline, not just the food.
Delia’s does an excellent job of creating a brand experience. They’re not just some restaurant with a logo printed on everything. Their menu, wallpaper, t-shirts, website, signage, ordering counter… everything lends to expressing the Delia’s brand, and not just a restaurant.
Next time you’re out to eat, or even at Delia’s, take an extra second to see if you feel like you’re experiencing the brand, or if you’re simply just grabbing a bite to eat. A brand experience is not just found in restaurants either… anyone ever been to an Apple Store?
If you’ve got another example of a great brand experience, let us know!
